The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) engaged students of Awudome Senior High School during its latest Roadshow, offering them a rare, direct encounter with the world of policy research. The programme featured interactive discussions on topical national development issues, career guidance from leading researchers, insights into ISSER's role in shaping Ghana's development, and guidance on University of Ghana admissions and academic pathways.

ISSER faculty lead sessions on key issues: Prof. Bawakyillenuo on water pollution, Dr. Adjei-Mantey on inflation, and Prof. Atta-Ankomah on statistics and surveys.

Representatives from ISSER’s Social and Economic Divisions gave engaging presentations on water pollution and inflation respectively, enabling the hall of over 1,200 students and school management to appreciate the importance of research and ISSER’s role in addressing Ghana’s development challenges. Students actively participated throughout, exploring how these issues affect everyday life and national development, while faculty highlighted the ways in which research informs policy and contributes to the country's growth.

Admissions Officer, Ms. Mawuena Abortta delivers an insightful session on University of Ghana admissions.

Adding a practical and especially well-received component, Ms. Mawuena Abortta, Admissions Officer at the University of Ghana, led a session on admission requirements across programmes. Students engaged keenly, asking pertinent questions to help them navigate their academic journeys and make informed choices about higher education.

Director Prof. Darko Osei addresses students, sharing an overview of ISSER’s work and impact.

Speaking on the significance of the event, the Director of ISSER, Prof. Robert Darko Osei reflected on the fulfilment of engaging young people directly. “ISSER believes research should not remain within academic walls. It was a fulfilling and refreshing experience taking time to connect with young people, share knowledge, and inspire the next generation to think critically about Ghana’s development and the role they can play in shaping the country’s future,” he said.

Headmistress Ernestina Akosua Peniana delivers remarks, expressing appreciation and reflecting on the impact of the engagement.

The Headmistress of Awudome SHS, Madam Ernestina Akosua Peniana, expressed her gratitude to ISSER for the initiative. “We are deeply grateful for this opportunity. The engagement has inspired both our students and staff. I am confident that the lessons shared today will make a positive difference in the lives of our students. Personally, I have learnt a lot and found this encounter truly motivating,” she noted.

Dr. Dzifa Torvikey inspires students with an engaging talk on discipline, ambition, and possibility.

A particularly memorable highlight came when ISSER faculty member Dr. Dzifa Torvikey, an alumna of Awudome SHS, addressed the students. Speaking from personal experience, she shared her journey and emphasised what is possible through dedication, hard work, and discipline. Her talk resonated deeply with students, reinforcing the message that great achievements are within reach with focus and perseverance.

ISSER presents the school with its 2024 flagship publications -- SGER and SDO -- alongside branded materials, received by the Headmistress and her team.

As part of the programme, ISSER presented the school with recent copies of its flagship publications, the 2024 editions of the State of the Ghanaian Economy Report (SGER) and the Social Development Outlook (SDO), alongside branded stationery and bags, further reflecting the Institute's commitment to bridging research and education.

Students actively engage, asking questions and contributing to discussions throughout the session.

Held on 13 March 2026, the visit to Awudome SHS builds on previous editions of the ISSER Roadshow, including the 2022 engagement at the University of Education, Winneba. The Roadshow is a key outreach initiative through which ISSER continues to expand its reach across Ghana, engaging diverse communities and ensuring that research remains accessible and relevant to all stakeholders.
