The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) is hosting the Japan Center Project, a new initiative aimed at strengthening academic, cultural and people-to-people exchange between Ghana and Japan.
Established with support from the Nippon Foundation, Japan, the initiative responds to the need for more sustained exchanges between Ghana and Japan, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. It is led by ISSER faculty and former Director, Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante.
“Beyond contributing to deepening international academic engagement, knowledge and cultural exchange, hosting the Japan Center Project demonstrates ISSER’s commitment to supporting the research endeavours of our faculty and advancing the strategic objectives of the University of Ghana,” said ISSER Director, Prof. Robert Darko Osei.
“ISSER looks forward to contributing to the Centre’s long-term success,” he added.
As host institution, ISSER is providing office space for the Japan Center Project, including space for Japanese language lectures.
Expanding opportunities for students
A key component of the Centre’s work is Japanese language and culture education, including introductory courses designed to make learning about Japan accessible to students and the public. The Centre will also work with Japanese companies to facilitate seminars, internships and other capacity-development opportunities, providing students with opportunities for professional exposure and engagement with Japanese businesses operating in Ghana.
As host, ISSER provides more than office and learning spaces, offering a fitting institutional home for a centre of international collaboration, including well-equipped spaces for academic and public events. A case in point, the fireside chat with Japanese astronaut and Chief Technology Officer for Asia Pacific at Axiom Space Dr. Koichi Wakata.
Held on 18 September 2026 at the ISSER Conference Facility, the event brought together students from selected senior high schools and members of the University community and explored Mr. Wakata’s experiences in space, lessons from a life of exploration, and insights into science and innovation.
Named the Japan Center Project, the Ghana–Japan Centre will run for an initial 5-year period, from 2026–2030.
